Hi Paddy,
Gmane, not gname.
See http://www.gmane.org , there is plenty of info. Basically, whatever
concern you have about security or privacy is addressed in some manner.
The comment about "newsgroup" postings means this: it is possible to read the
mailing list as if it were a newsgroup. Say, like this:
news://news.gmane.org/gmane.comp.lang.fortran90
(currently not functioning). Those reading the list this way could reply as
if they were reading a regular newsgroup. Before their first post would be
accepted, they'd have to reply to an automatic address test to ensure no
spamming was occurring. Their post would automatically be sent to the mailing
list as well as being posted on the gmane newsserver host. No other
newsservers would be able to host the list.
So if you currently choose to read the list via email, nothing would change on
your end -- you'd still get all the email you currently do and you wouldn't
see any headers with newsgroup info.
I happen to be subscribed to several lists on Gmane but I selected the
subscription option to *not* receive email, since I read via the newsgroup
method.
Yes, I'm well aware that there is currently an archive for comp-fortran-90,
but it is fairly slow to access.
The reason for Gmane's existence is that Lars maintains a piece of
newsreader/mailreader software (which I happen to be using to write this
email!), and he prefers to read mailing lists as if they were newsgroups. So
he created the means to do so. Self-interested altruism at its best.
