Learning Resources at Northumbria have catalogued the holdings of the
English Regional Arts Boards and Year of the Artist Archives, which along
with the Visual Arts UK 1996 Archive form a Cultural Policy Collection.
The catalogue is now on the library web site and can be accessed via the
URL listed above.
1. Visual Arts UK 1996 This was a celebration of the visual arts in the
North of England during 1996 and part of the Arts Council's Arts 2000
initiative. The archives were donated by many organisations and individuals
involved in the year and include administrative records, publicity
material, market research papers, artists' work photographs and videotapes
including broadcast quality tapes from local television.
2. English Regional Arts Boards This was the umbrella organisation for the
10 local arts boards in England. The records were acquired when the
regional boards were wound up and merged with the Arts Council in 2001.
They are mainly administrative records, policy documents, report etc. and
date from the 1960's to 2001. They chart the history of the arts boards and
Arts Council, the various changes in management and government funding of
the arts
3. Year of the Artist The final year of the Arts Council's Arts 2000
initiative. This was a nation-wide celebration of the artist from June 2000
to May 2001. The emphasis was on artists’ residencies with the aim of "1000
artist in 1000 places". The collection includes publicity material,
photographs, videotapes and digital copies of artists’ work.
These archives are part of the University Library's Special Collections and
access is open on application. All material is copyright and permission is
required for reproduction.
