The introduction of student fees and changes in the financial support
arrangements for students in UK higher education has seen a rise in the
level of debt experienced by students. Consequently many students now
routinely undertake paid work during their studies both to assist with the
payment of fees and to support themselves.
This major two-day conference will focus on the challenges faced by higher
education institutions in both facilitating employment opportunities for
students and also in ensuring the adequate support for students who
undertake paid work during the course of their studies. The conference
provides a valuable opportunity to learn from the experience of colleagues
in the US and also from institutions in the UK who have adopted a strategic
approach to tackling these issues.
Day one will focus on how higher education institutions can facilitate good
quality employment opportunities for their students and will include on
campus job shops, campus employment opportunities and setting up a campus
'job shop'. Day two will focus on how best to support students undertaking
paid work during their studies including; student support services and
relationships with the academic community.
