The display option is the only way if you want to do it with the SPM interface.
An alternative would be to create a script for modifying .mat files.
e.g. The following will flip in the y direction.
P=spm_get(Inf,'*.IMAGE');
M = zeros(4,4,size(P,1));
for i=1:size(M,3),
M(:,:,i) = spm_get_space(deblank(P(i,:)));
end;
for i=1:size(M,3),
spm_get_space(deblank(P(i,:)), diag([1 -1 1])*M(:,:,i));
end;
