Conference announcement and call for papers
Musical Collaboration
Department of Psychology, The Open University
Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th April 2004
This international conference offers an opportunity to explore the many
social processes involved in music listening, creation and performance -
examining, for example, both novices and professional musicians as they
interact musically, as well as considering the communication between
musicians and audience. The theme is intended to be broad in scope, and
will include research looking at the different ways in which people work
together, how collaboration can be facilitated and improved, and how the
results of such work can be assessed. Contributions are welcome from
researchers at all levels and are especially encouraged from postgraduate
students and researchers early in their careers. In addition to individual
papers, symposia and workshops, space and time will be made at the
conference for posters to be displayed and viewed. Please send abstracts
for papers, symposia and workshops (200 words) and for posters (100 words)
by January 9th 2004 to Dorothy Miell at the address below.
Invited Keynote Speaker: Prof Keith Sawyer, Washington University, St Louis
My talk will begin by presenting a guiding framework for analyzing
collaboration in musical groups. I will then connect that framework to
collaboration more generally, in classroom group discussion, in creative
domains including art and science, and in creative work teams. I make two
critical connections: first, that musical collaboration can help us to
understand all collaboration, but also that the study of other forms of
collaboration can help us to understand musical interaction.

The Aubrey Hickman Award
£500 biennially
Aubrey Hickman (1922-1986)
Aubrey was a founder member of SEMPRE, and its first Honorary Treasurer. In
1980 he was elected Chair of the ISME Research Commission. He was a fine
viola player and composer as well as a teacher, lecturer and academic,
publishing papers on statistics, the philosophy of music, creativity and
perception. His intellectual integrity was matched with a generosity of
spirit, particularly to newcomers to these areas of research.
Purpose of the Award
The Aubrey Hickman Award is intended to promote original research from new
workers in the field.
Eligibility
The Award is offered biennially to a graduate student submitting the best
paper to the Society's two-day Easter conference.
Criteria
The Aubrey Hickman Award will be given in recognition of a paper that offers
a significant and previously unpublished contribution to the knowledge and
understanding of music education or music psychology.
Applying
Applicants should submit an extended abstract of 2000-3000 words to Dorothy
Meill by Jan 9th 2004 at address overleaf. A condition of acceptance of the
award is that the paper (of 6000-8000 words) is offered first to 'Psychology
of Music' for consideration for publication.
The decision-making process
The organising committee of the two-day conference, a SEMPRE committee
member (if one is not involved in organising the conference) and the Editor
of the 'Psychology of Music' will judge contributions according to the
quality of the research that they describe, its significance to the field,
originality and the clarity with which it is presented. Applicants will be
informed of the outcome at least eight weeks before the conference is held.
The decision of the panel is final, and the Society regrets that it is
unable to enter into any correspondence regarding its decision.

The SEMPRE Conference Awards
Awards totalling up to £1000 biennially
Purpose of the Award
The SEMPRE Conference Awards are intended to enable full-time students or
part-timers who are non wage earners to attend one of the Society's
conferences-particularly the biennial two-day conference-through meeting the
fee and the costs of travel and subsistence.
Eligibility
The SEMPRE Conference Awards are open to students who wish to attend and
contribute to one of the Society's conferences through offering a
presentation or poster.
Criteria
The criteria by which applications will be judged include the importance of
attendance at the conference for furthering the studies of the student
concerned, and the likelihood of the applicant being unable to obtain
funding from other sources.
Applying
Applicants should apply to present a paper or poster to the conference
concerned in the usual way, and make it clear they wish to be considered for
a SEMPRE Conference Award. In a separate letter they should explain how
attendance at the conference will assist them in furthering their studies,
give an indication of expected costs, and say why other sources of funding
are not likely to be available to them.
The decision-making process
All applications will be considered in the first instance by the organising
committee of the conference concerned, and, subject to acceptance,
subsequently by representatives of the SEMPRE Awards Panel. Applicants will
be informed of the outcome at least eight weeks before the date of the
conference. The decision of the panel is final, and the Society regrets that
it is unable to enter into any correspondence regarding its decision. Each
application is treated individually on its merits; hence previous applicants
are not precluded from applying.
