Dear all,
A reminder that there will be an informal meeting to discuss plans for Einstein Year 2005 as part of the Institute of Physics Congress at Heriott Watt University on Monday March 24
I've copied my original notice into this e-mail, please note the altered phone number for contacting me at Congress from Monday of next week. Note too that in my first e-mail I got the time wrong - the meeting will start at 6.30pm.
Please come along if you can
With best wishes - Dianne
2005 will be Einstein Year!
Albert Einstein is probably the one physicist familiar to most of the world and certainly e=mc2 must be the only equation known by non-scientists. 2005 marks the centenary of his 'miraculous year' in which he wrote articles which provided the basis of three fundamental fields in physics: the theory of relativity, quantum theory and the theory of Brownian motion. 2005 will be celebrated by the worldwide physics community with a year of activities to show the wonder and excitement of physics and its crucial role in modern life and industry.
'Einstein in the 21 century' ('Einstein Year') is the United Kingdom's contribution to this worldwide festival of physics.
The European Physical Society has instigated the year, designating 2005 'World Year of Physics'. The EPS 'World Year' Website can be accessed from the European Physical Society's Webpage www.eps.org
Co-ordination of activities in the UK is by a small committee organised by the Institute of Physics with input from a range of organisations involved in science communication and education in the UK. It is expected that this committee will increase its membership as plans progress.
This committee is seeking views from the physics community and from those with an interest or professional involvement in science communication as to how best to mark the year in the UK.
There will be a discussion meeting , held as part of the Physics Cngress at Heriot Watt University on Monday 24 March 2003 at 6.30pm for one hour. Please come along to find out more about the plans so far and to provide us with your views and ideas for Einstein Year.
If you are already attending Congress just come along, the meeting is in the Carnegie Room, Jame Watt Centre. If you only want to attend this meeting but not Congress, please e-mail me - [log in to unmask] or telephone 07773 53 11 51 so that I can arrange a Congress pass for you.
I look forward to seeing you on the 24th.
