There's various science writing awards listed on the psci-com website under the section Competitions and awards: http://psci-com.org.uk/browse/ypages/302.079.html. It includes the
Max Pertuz Essay Prize, organised by the Medical Research Council (MRC).
I am checking with my Wellcome colleagues whether the Millennial Science Essay Competition, sponsored by the New Scientist and the Wellcome Trust, is still in existence.
The list also provides a description of the Times Higher Education Supplement/Oxford University Press Science Writing Prize, an award for previously unpublished writing about popular science. However, the link is dead and the THES web site needs you to register for a free trail before allowing you to search, so contacting them direct might be the best thing.
