1- EXHIBITION: SOFT CINEMA by LEV MANOVICH
THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 18, 2003
10am – 10pm
Level 1, Orientation Space

Lev Manovich is a digital media artist and theorist currently in
residence at BALTIC.

Soft Cinema is an ambient cinema project that uses a large database to
create short narrative films. It consists of two main parts – the
generator and the display. As cinema it is Algorithmic (it has rules
such as the number of frames), Macro (it uses high bandwidth and high
resolution), Multimedia (it uses video and 2d animation, graphics and
diagrams) and Database-driven (all the clips, colours, soundtracks are
stored within it and the project generated from it).

Manovich writes: “Rather than beginning with a script and then creating
media elements which visualise it, I investigate a different paradigm:
starting with a large database and then generating narratives from it.
In Soft Cinema, The media elements are selected from a database of a few
hundred video clips to construct a potentially unlimited number of
different short films.”

Come and see the latest developments in this dynamic multimedia project. www.manovich.net/softcinema2

2- WORKSHOP: BRIAN DUFFY and THE MODIFIED TOY ORCHESTRA
THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 18, 2003
DROP IN between 10am and 6pm, no booking required
Level 1, Cube Space

Brian Duffy is a sound artist and performer based in Birmingham. His
work includes recordings, installations, live performances and the
creation of ‘surplus value objects’ often from old toys.

Bring your own electronic sound toys (anything from keyboards to dolls
with voice-boxes, except those made by the company v-tech) and work with
Brian to rewire and reconfigure them to create new musical instruments.
If you are unable to bring a toy to modify, drop in anyway and
reconfigure one from Brian’s collection of abandoned toys.

Brian will play these instruments as part of a collaborative performance
with Rupert Huber and Radiotopia at BALTIC at 8pm on September 18, 2003

3- PERFORMANCE: RUPERT HUBER / RADIOTOPIA
THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 18, 2003
8pm – 10pm
Level 1, Performance Space

Rupert Huber is a composer and musician based in Vienna who uses a
digital filesharing system to create electronic sound performances.
Radiotopia is a sound network database created by August Black and
Norbert Math in collaboration with Rupert Huber, consisting of sound,
text and image files, incorporating a playlist of over 500 files. The
database is divided into three parts: input, transformation and output.
Sounds can be sent into the database, mixed and changed there, and taken
out of the database for local broadcasting use. Using both his own
archive of completed compositions and the Radiotopia database of
archived sounds, Rupert Huber will live mix and seamlessly transition
between solo work and collaborative work in his performance,
incorporating sounds generated by Brian Duffy and the Modified Toy Orchestra.

Organised by BALTIC and the University of Sunderland.
