I want to study for a PhD, and therefore need two things: a 'home', and
funding. I need a backer, or I can't afford to do it, and I get the
feeling that entry into hospitals to collect data and stuff would be
greatly facilitated by the presence of a sponsor.
I want to do this partly for myself in the sense that I've been pushing
this idea away, ever since I did my MA in 1997, and it keeps coming back.
But also I want very much to do it for the profession, especially with
relation to healthcare.
What I want to look at is the issue of register, with particular relation
to word-based therapies; i.e. those whose principal diagnostic and
therapeutic tool is language. When working across language and culture in
areas such as mental health and speech pathology there must be many
questions to ask. I don't know precisely what my question is, yet, and it
would probably take a year to define it, but it has to do with the impact
of emotional language on interpreters' methods and output, in such
settings.
If anybody can offer advice or help, I shall be glad to hear about it.
kind regards
Jan Cambridge
