Conference Announcement
You are invited to attend the 1st CESAGen International Conference on
2-3 March 2004 at The Royal Society, London.
Conference Theme
Genomics is at the core of many of society's most crucial and polarising
debates. The first CESAGen Conference on 'Genomics and Society' will
focus on the radical new genetic technologies that, fifty years after
the discovery of the double helical structure of DNA, are said to hold
great promises, and challenges, for the future well-being of humanity.
These technologies are developing rapidly, and key stakeholders and
publics are finding it difficult to deal with the complexities they
present. This is particularly so in areas such as genetically modified
food and crops, designer drugs, and human cloning. This Conference will
present results of current interdisciplinary, social science research
from both the UK and overseas, to inform and help shape these
developments.
Speakers will include:
Paul Atkinson, Associate Director, CESAGen
Ruth Chadwick, Director, CESAGen
Ian Diamond, Chief Executive of the ESRC
Mike Fortun, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
Herbert Gottweis, University of Vienna
Sheila Jasanoff, Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University
Andrew Webster, Director of the ESRC Innovative Health Technologies
Programme, University of York
Peter Whittaker, CESAGen
Brian Wynne, CESAGen
Programme
The programme will include a mixture of invited speaker sessions and
parallel sessions. The parallel sessions will focus on CESAGen's
research themes. The six main themes are Genomics and the
transformation of knowledge production; Genomics, economics and
innovation; Genomics, ethics and regulation; Genomics, identity and
social organisation; Genomics, risk and responsibility and Genomics,
global discourse and cultural capital, with three parallel cross-cutting
themes of Globalisation; Health and Environment; and Public Engagement.
Registration
The registration fee is £150 for attendance only or £185 for attendance
and conference dinner on 2 March. A limited number of discounted student
places are available at a cost of £75 or £110 including conference
