Subject: [Hps] Death of Susan Abrams
Susan Abrams, long-time editor at University of Chicago Press,
died Sunday evening, June 29, at about 7:15 p.m. Susan
was known to many in the history and philosophy of science
community. She established a very large and distinguished
list of books in history and philosophy of science at the Press.
She did this by cultivating young authors and renowned
scholars, all feeling the touch of her special concern.
Chicago books have won the Pfizer prize (given
annually by the History of Science Society) more
often than any other Press. Susan was responsible for
all but one of these awarded books.
In her honor, the Press has established the Susan Abrams
prize, which will be given yearly for the best manuscrip
submitted to the Press in the area of history and philosophy
of science.
Susan was diagnosed with lung cancer a year ago. During
these last many months she fought her disease with typical
tenacity and courage. A memorial service will be held on the
University of Chicago campus in the fall.
