Dear List
As part of its NOF project Tate is about to embark on the creation of an
online glossary tool. It is intended that the glossary will cover
approximately 500 terms drawn from the Group and Movement categories of
our subject index, and a list of general art terms. At present we plan
to present the glossary as a resource in itself, with online visitors
able to browse through it and see visual examples related to terms.
Additionally, users will be able to see definitions of glossary terms
(either via a pop up box or a link) where they appear in the collections
area of the website, for example within catalogue texts, object records
or the subject index.
We wish to apply the glossary terms to content that is already available
on our website and are investigating methods to automatically tag the
relevant terms retrospectively (rather than identifying them as part of
an editing process). Has anyone on the list produced an online glossary
or similar resource using automatic methods to identify words/terms
within textual documents or other online material? Can anyone offer any
advice or experience?
Many thanks
