Shouldn't we be asking people from ethnic minorities - apart from those on staff here?

> I would like to draw list members attention to the consultation exercise that CILIP is undertaking as to whether a Spectrum initiative should be introduced into the UK LIS profession. Spectrum is a programme initiated by the American Library Association whereby a number of buraries are awarded each year to people from minority ethnic communities to gain academic and professional qualifications in library and information science. This is followed up by a mentoring scheme designed to ensure that there will be a pool of able leaders from minority backgrounds available to the profession in future years. The results of our consultation exercise so far already indicate that we will need something different to the ALA's Spectrum in this country if we are to tackle effectively the barriers that exist to people from minority ethnic backgrounds entering and progressing in our profession. But what are your views? We want to get as wide a response as possible and invite list members and others to vist the CILIP website and comment online. The address is: www.cilip.org.uk/spectrum
