I saw your email and thought you might like to know that I have asked if
CILIP will be doing a guide for the Voluntary Sector, as we do not fit any
of those listed.
On salaries, I note in today's Guardian an advert for a Marketing/Promotion
Executive in CILIP's Training & Development Dept, salary £24,772 -£27,896
requiring only two years experience, a better salary than most of the posts
advertised in the current appointments bulletin! Perhaps we should all work
for CILIP!

Do these guides bench mark the post with any other sector, and if so which
do you use for the various library sectors?

CILIP produces a series of salary guides, for the different lis sectors.
For many years the 'special library' guide was attempting to be all things
to all sectors, which was clearly unsatisfactory. In order to develop a
series of more focused guides, we worked with other organisations to develop
the original guide into a series.
* The Government Salaries Guide was produced in partnership with the
Government Libraries Group.
* The Health Guide was produced in partnership with the Health
Libraries Group.
* The Law Libraries Salaries Guide was produced in partnership with
BIALL.
We now want to start work on guides specifically aimed at the industrial and
the commercial sectors (it will be crucial to define what is covered by
these terms), beginning with a 'industrial' salary guide. The Industrial
and Commercial Libraries Group (ICLG) have agreed to support work on an
industry guide, and two dates have been arranged to discuss the structure,
content etc of this new guide: Wednesday 26th February and Wednesday 12th
March. Both meetings will begin at 2pm, and finish at 4pm, and take place
at CILIP Ridgmount Street.
If you are interested in participating in either of these meetings, please
contact me. If you are unable to attend one of the meetings, you may still
like to contribute to the process, in which case, please send any ideas, and
information to me prior to Weds 26th February. It will be important to
ensure that the guides which are produced accurately reflect the true job
situation, whilst also honestly portraying the types of role which are
undertaken.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Regards
Lyndsay
