Most of us don't emerge straight from our MAs as specialists. If we do, then
it could be argued that our MA didn't do its job correctly. Specialisms develop
(or rather may develop depending on one's career path) in our professional
posts. As we are supposed to charter soon (within a few years) after qualifying,
then the chartership report will perhaps therefore chart our development FROM
newly qualified TO specialist. The format is aimed at people in their first few
years of professional development. It's not really CILIP's fault if some of us
leave it for so long that we can't remember what it was not to be specialist!

That would be more appropriate for a Fellowship submission perhaps? (though I
still think a professional shouldn't be blinkered to, or ignorant of, what's
going on outside their specialism. It can lead to very dogmatic views, I find.)I
have been qualified for long enough (since 1994) to put myself forward as a
Fellow, but it's my own fault I didn't get around to Chartering until last
December and therefore can't go for it for some time :-O I agree with Cilip's
moves towards giving deadlines to encourage people to charter within a more
appropriate timescale. Plenty of us have proved we couldn't do it without the
"push" of a deadline, haven't we? ;-)
