                  CALIM/NoWAL course announcements
                    Apologies for cross posting

There are still places on the following CALIM/NoWAL (Consortium of Academic
Libraries in Manchester/North West Academic Libraries) courses. For further details or
to book a place on a course go to
http://www.calim.ac.uk/traindev/course/courseinfo.asp

As always applicants are welcomed from all sectors and institutions within the library
and information community.

5 March 2003
Follow the sun: the 24 x 7 Helpdesk Service Salford - cost 15 pounds
Speaker Jean Sykes
Time 11.00-12.00

In 2001 Jean got together with IT directors from two Australian universities and the
University of Colorado to create a 7x24 helpdesk for students called Follow the Sun.
This service operates at no cost to the partners, with the 24 hours split into four shifts
of six. It works on the simple principle that helpdesk staff on duty in the four partner
institutions will handle enquiries from users in any of the other three universities during
the six hours assigned to them. The service benefits users from all four places who
are accessing their IT services during unsocial hours when their helpdesks are not
staffed. Jean is interested in investigating whether a similar arrangement could be
devised for library enquiries on a 7x24 basis
