Hi,
we have also had some trouble with the out of the box kernel,
although not with an SMP machine.
In our case we missed support to some "new" GigaBit NIC and some
old SCSI disk driver, we had to recompile and add the missing modules (for
the case of the "new" NIC we had the sources from Intel).
Furthermore the APM screen blanking option was causing our CE to
crashed without any error messages.
In all case recompilation (with the recomended gcc version) solved
the problem. We have also observed that using newer or older gcc versions
than the recomended on the README file in the source directory causes
unpredictible results, system unable to boot, or random errors (in our
case networking errors) uncorrelated with any activity.
