On 16th of October the steering group for the Forum on Information
Standards in Heritage met at the National Trust Office in York. Among the
subjects discussed was a response to the consultation paper on Historic
Environment Records. The steering committee unanimously welcomed a chance
to respond on behalf of FISH. The response to the consultation paper can be

“FISH is an informal consortium of heritage-sector information standards
developers. It was established in 1999 to co-ordinate, develop, maintain
and promote standards for the recording of heritage information. Members of
FISH are drawn from all regions of the United Kingdom and Ireland,
including representatives of all the main heritage sector agencies. English
Heritage and ALGAO are represented. Participants in the FISH email
discussion list supplement the work of a steering committee. This list has
a national and international membership of more than 300. At present the
committee member organisations contribute the time and expenses of their
staff to support the work of FISH. The Forum receives no formal funding.

The work of FISH includes co-ordination of development and maintenance work
on two complementary standards: MIDAS, the standard for the content of
monument inventories, and INSCRIPTION, a set of standard indexing tools
