Hello fellow FISH people,
I have been following this discussion with great interest and feel I should
slip in at this point to offer comment on a couple of points raised by Nick
Boldrini:
'I am not sure what you mean by Aspects, and Content but it should include
Aircraft Crash site and Maritime standards (and believe these have already
been started?? sort of??)).........'
Nick is absolutely right, in fact a MIDAS annexe addressing the recording of
watercraft and aircraft is undergoing a peer review as we speak. Following
the analysis of feedback I shall be presenting our findings and conclusions
to the next FISH meeting in York on October 16th, and look forward to seeing
many of you there.
'And I think it is the what for bits that determine the form of MIDAS II, IE
what sort of data you see as being core data. In the above examples, we
would want to know about Aircraft sites as they are protected and
potentially at threat from development, so we need to know about them in
enough detail to protect them. Maritime records, on the other hand, are less
at risk from development (and not our responsibility to protect if I have
understood correctly) so we might want to know about them in enough detail
to provide information to people about them only...........'
There are currently, I believe, thirty-nine significant wreck sites afforded
protected status in English waters, the management of these sites currently
being the responsibility of English Heritage. While these sites are
protected from development they are not protected from the elements and will
eventually disappear. The vast majority of wreck sites, however, do not
enjoy protected status and can be affected by the removal of aggragate from
the seabed, the laying of pipes and cables, the construction of wind farms
etc. The prohibitive cost and lack of scope for financial profit in rescuing
and preserving vessel remains means that we need to record as much
information as possible about these sites before they are gone forever.
Okay, said my piece, carry on.
All the best
