MeSH is really good and widely used - but from recent conversations with
people in medical document management, the National Electronic Library
for Health (NELH) is promoting SNOMED (the Systematised Nomenclature for
Medicine) instead. See http://www.snomed.org/. I understand that this
is the topic of licencing negotiations just now, so you may already be
licenced to use it for certain purposes (if of course you find that it
meets your needs). It may be worth contacting Ben Toth of the NELH for
more details.
