Wimbledon School of Art : THE CENTRE FOR DRAWING
Drawn & Quartered:
Dale Adcock: Helen Frosi: Nina Ogden:
Chris Simmons
It has been the case for some time that artists are exploring the
possibilities offered by drawing in the widest sense of that activity.
Drawing affords artists room for manoeuvre, both physically and
conceptually. Drawing is accessible and flexible. It provides a way of
maintaining a creative momentum that, at times, the more prescribed
techniques and processes of other mediums do not.
The four undergraduate painting students in this short exhibition are
all in their final year. They have come to incorporate drawing in their
work - not in a subsidiary sense as conventional skill, or as a research
tool, safely relegated to a portfolio or plan chest drawer - but as a
primary means of determining the physical and intellectual nature of
their practice.
Dale Adcock sees drawing as a medium to question issues of meaning and
value in images. This has led him to locate his work within "the liminal
boundaries between drawing and installation".
Helen Frosi, writes of drawing as "the perfect conduit between the
visceral world and the landscapes of empirical experience". She uses
"the humble line" to enact a near ritualistic examination of aspects of
daily life.
Nina Ogden makes complex, seemingly improvised wall drawings, which
derive from her panoramic sketchbooks. Her work centres on "the elements
of desire used by the Surrealists; mad love, psychic automation, the
absurd, games, play and all forms of association".
Chris Simmons makes ink drawings using a splatter technique, which
depict "animalistic beings that blur ideas of sexuality identity,
highlighting anxieties about our animal origins".
There will be a Panel Discussion about the issues that arise from this
exhibition and from the wider context of contemporary drawing practice
on Wednesday 23rd April at 4:30pm to 6:00pm in the large seminar room,
main building, WSA.
The panel will compromise the four artists and:
Anita Taylor, Head of the School of fine art,
Dr Malcolm Quinn, Tutor, History of Art and Contextual Studies,
Michael Ginsborg, Director of the Centre for Drawing. (Chair).
