Title: Research Officer - Fixed Term for Two Years Full-Time
Commencing February 2004
The Department of Social and Policy Sciences has received funding
for a study that will primarily investigate decision making in the context
of youth justice. The central aim of the research is to develop an
understanding of the various ways in which youth justice
professionals and come to make judgements about ‘risk’ and ‘need’.
The successful candidate will work closely with the Principal Grant
Holder, Dr. Joanna Phoenix.
The successful candidate is likely to be a highly motivated individual
who is keen to work on this exciting project and highly organised in
their work. S/he must have:
ß A good first degree in social sciences (preferably in Sociology or
Criminology)
ß IT literacy
ß Good interpersonal interpersonal and communication skills
In addition the successful candidate should preferably have
ß A higher degree Sociology or Criminology
ß Some understanding of contemporary issues in youth justice
practice
ß Experience of research, including searching academic literature,
producing annotated bibliographies and report writing
ß Abilities in qualitative research methods, and analytical skills
The successful candidate will be located in the Department of Social
Sciences and primarily supervised by the Principal Grant Holder, Dr
Joanna Phoenix. Interviews for this post are likely to be in the week
commencing 15th December 2004.

Starting salary will be up to £20,311 per annum
