I'll look forward to the new website section then!
Indeed, thanks for the comments all (I may quote some of them too if
that's OK) - there's not much I don't disagree with - however the waters
still seem to be muddy in terms of doing something about 'it'. It's not
only from an introspective viewpoint as a 'professional' (see the
DisabilityNow article on 'professionals') but, if the field is
chaotic/undirected to us, imagine what it must look like to users... )-:
Sorry - not trying to be negative! I'm sure there is lots of good
stuff happening to raise the profile of the industry!
Cheers.
Simon

Subject: Careers in AT
Dear Simon et al,
Just back from sick leave I have read with great interest all of your
comments on careers in this field. Only three weeks ago we at FAST
agreed to dedicate a section of our website to AT recruitment and other
professional issues! (will let you know as soon as it's up).
Not only that but in the course of our work with the Assistive
Technology Forum (an umbrella body bringing together organisations to
try to improve AT services) professional development issues are
prominent and are likely to feature heavily in the position paper we are
currently drafting.
I am due to run a session on the Forum at RAATE and was planning to
focus on professional development - clearly great minds think alike!
I thought Gareth Adkins summarised admirably the cause of the problem
(ie the state of the services, funding and commissioning). I do support
AT certification however, although clearly in and of itself it would not
solve the underlying problems of the services.
Thank you for raising this Simon and all of you for your comments (and I
hope you don't mind if I use them in my work with the Forum!)
Best wishes,
Moira
