Unlocking access to Scottish Textiles:
Project Co-ordinator
Project Survey and Documentation Officers
Full-time/part time £18,265-£21,4125, pro-rata.
12 months fixed-term from April/May 2003
We are looking for three energetic and enthusiastic people
to join a groundbreaking project to survey, document and
develop a web-based database of Scottish textile
collections in museums and archives, using international
standards of description and agreed access points, and
develop the framework of a collaborative collecting policy.
The posts are grant funded by the Scottish Museums Council
Strategic Change Fund. The project partners are
Heriot- Watt University, Glasgow School of Art, University
of Glasgow Archive Service, Paisley Museum and Art
Galleries, Scottish Borders Council Museums and Galleries
Service and the University of Dundee Archive, Records
Management and Museum Service It is anticipated that two
posts will be based at the University's Scottish Borders
Campus, Galashiels, and one at Glasgow School of Art. The
posts will involve regular travel to document textile
collections thoughout Scotland and there will be scope for
some flexible/home working.
The project co-ordinator will manage and support the work
of the survey and documentation officers and monitor
project progress towards agreed targets. You will play a
major role in developing and documenting the project
methodology, and manage the dissemination and evaluation
programme, working closely with the IT developers, and
liasing with project partners, the user group and other
participants and stakeholders.
The Project Survey and Documentation Officers will document
textile collections within the project partner museums and
archives, and other institutions holding relevant
collections and compile a database of the surveyed
collections and other web based resources. You will also
assist in the development of the project methodology and
contribute to its evaluation.
You should have a degree and post-graduate qualification in
archive administration/museum studies. You will also have
relevant museum/archive cataloguing experience and a
working knowledge of /MDA Spectrum/ ISAD(G) EAD and
authority standards. Good IT, interpersonal, teamworking
and organisational skills are essential. Experience of
Scottish textile museum/archive collections and knowledge
of the history of the textile industry would be an
advantage In addition, the Project Co-ordinator should have
relevant project management experience, good knowledge of
current database, web, and image technologies and the
ability to work with IT developers to achieve the effective
integration of these technologies.
