Dear all
The announcement below is for the benefit of postgraduate students and
academics, so please pass it on to relevant visitors to your repositories.
To book a place, researchers should contact Hannah Lowery at the University
of Bristol - see address below - and not me - especially as I am about to go
on 3 weeks' leave.
Many thanks
Sarah

A2A Awareness Session
University of Bristol
Wednesday 7 May 2003, 2.15pm - 4.15pm
The A2A Central Team and University of Bristol Special Collections are
organising a free A2A Awareness Session, to be held in the Arts and Social
Sciences Library Training Room at the University of Bristol at 2.15pm on
Wednesday 7 May. This event is designed to bring the A2A website at
www.a2a.pro.gov.uk to the attention of academic and postgraduate
researchers, primarily in history. It may also be of value for
undergraduate history students and for researchers in other disciplines.
The event will feature:
- Presentation and demonstration of A2A by Sarah Stark, Regional Liaison
Co-Ordinator, A2A
- Talk by an academic historian on the use of A2A as a research tool
- An opportunity for participants to explore A2A and its potential for their
own research
Information on other strands of the UK's national archives network will also
be available at the event.
A2A is led by 3 partners: the British Library; and the Historical
Manuscripts Commission and the Public Record Office (about to come together
to form the National Archives). It allows researchers to search and browse
catalogues of archives held in over 250 record offices, libraries and other
local, specialist and national repositories across England, dating from the
900s to the present day. The A2A database also links to contact details for
repositories from the Historical Manuscripts Commission's ARCHON site.
Together, this information makes it possible to search for references to
archives and then arrange to see them or order copies with a few mouse
clicks.
The themes used to select catalogues for the A2A database encompass a wide
range of subjects, including: commerce and industry; the development of
great estates and the English landscape; the British in India; 19th and 20th
century science and politics; and local government and administration in
London and the English counties in the 16th-20th centuries. They are useful
resources for the study of political and international history, industrial
history, and mediaeval landholding; and for work in many other fields.
Places at the A2A Awareness Session will be limited to 18. Academic
researchers who wish to reserve a place should contact:
