CALL FOR PAPERS
ACA 2004
ACCOUNTABILITY AND ETHICS
IN THE ARCHIVAL SPHERE
Association of Canadian Archivists
2004 Annual Conference, Montréal, Québec
27-29 May 2004
Accountability...ethics...integrity...whistleblower...
These seem to have become the latest buzz words. We appear to live in a
time that yearns for individuals and corporate bodies that embody these
ideals in word and deed to protect us against other buzz words such as
Ipperwash, Walkerton, Enron, Arthur Anderson....
How do archives and archivists fit into all of this? ACA Conference 2004
is your chance to scrutinize these words and what they mean in the
archival sphere.
Accountability and ethics:
· connect archivists and archival institutions to the rest of the world
· are critical in preserving the societal memory
· require conscious decision-making
· where perception equals reality
· justify the need for sound recordkeeping
· suffer when records are not accounted for
· protect the rights of the individual
The Programme Committee encourages proposals from a wide variety of
perspectives such as the responsibilities of archival institutions and
individual archivists to their sponsors, to the public, and to their
profession; and proposals which explore the nature and role of codes of
ethics, and the ethical dimensions and implications of archival
concepts, practices, laws and policies.
Please join us next year in Montréal to discuss how accountability and
ethics in the archival sphere have a direct impact on the lives of our
citizens and democratic societies.
SUBMITTING PROPOSALS:
The conference sessions will be determined based on the proposals
received. We encourage individuals to submit fully developed session
proposals, including confirmed participation of the speakers but
individual session presentation proposals are also welcome. Use the

on the ACA website at www.archivists.ca.
Submitting your session proposal in electronic form is strongly
encouraged.
