Hi Keith
sorry I was not trying to suggest that the research was superseded by the
new CD. in fact having both the older version and the newer one I must say
that I prefer the older one for on site estimates of colour as the booklet
and swatch are easier to use that a laptop. Also I noticed that the Cd
version offer less choices due to a reduction in colours that contrast. I
wondered whether this was because of further research you had undertaken, or
changes to the range of colours that Dulux make available.
As Keith points out the basis of the system is still the Project Rainbow
research.
cheers
marcus

Subject: Re: Measurement for colour contrast
I have just seen an enquiry from Rahmah Mohd Talib about colour contrast.
Marcus is indeed right about the contrast CD although the Research is as
relevant to the latest CD as it was to the previous one - the numbers are
the same - only the order has altered.
It is important to determine whether or not it is colour or luminance
contrast you wish to measure on site, as suggested there is equipment
available - but it is really too expensive unless colour measurement is to
be a major part of your work. The use of colour swatches is really good
enough in most built environment situations. Certainly, unless extensive
lighting measurements are also taken the use of colour swatches will be ok
in most situations.
More information on colour and lighting and their general use in the
environment for people who are visually impaired (Project Rainbow) or those
who are deaf or hard of hearing (Project Crystal), equally as important in
the communication process, is available on the Research Group's web site on
www.reading.ac.uk/ie.
