The classic peer-to-peer learning environment is Colloquia, which was
developed with JISC funding in the late 1990s. It's still free of charge
and can be downloaded from www.colloquia.net. Our current project is to
incorporate the RELOAD content tool into it, and then to implement the
Learning Design specification, which will allow complex learning
activities to be designed and run. While it is does not have as wide a
range of tools as Groove, it has been designed for education, and is
multiplatform. The key idea is that learners and teachers have exactly
the same capabilities, unlike server based VLEs. learners can set up
their own groups and subgroups, share resources, invite other people to
join them, and engage in discussions.
