Dave
Those are my impressions also.
The only extra point is that we really need something in pure Java for
plotting so that SPLAT etc can be truly pure Java e.g. for applets.

Subject: Re: ADASS and IVOA ideas
Dave,
With my AST hat on (do I have any other?) I'd say that the IVOA data
model group (both the smaller sub-group and - possibly to a lesser extent
- the main group) was definitely moving towards a flexible AST-like
representation of WCS. If this continues, AST could be well placed to be
one of the few existing software systems which can handle the resulting
WCS data model. I would therefore say that it is important that I press on
with the plans to get XML encodings into the C-version, initially to
support Arnold's STC schema, but also to make it easier to assimilate
any further schemas that may emerge, e.g. for transformations.
Debate with various people on other miscalleneous AST topics also led to
the following items being added to my AST wish-list (not in any order):
1) Support for discontinuous Mappings (e.g. spectra with breaks in them)
2) Definition of a Region class to define a region within a specified
Frame. A bit like the ARD library, but taking into account Arnolds Region
schema. This would also be needed for 1).
3) A method on Mapping which is similar to astResample but which conserves
flux.
4) Logarithmic axes in Plot.
