Alexander Matsas: Landscape
Here, within this mineral landscape
of cliffs and ocean, diamond and sapphires,
offering to the grinding-stone of Time
nothing that’s mortal,
within its light, enormous and triumphant,
immaculate of any stain but your shadow,
where the only thing which carries the seed of death
is your own body,
perhaps again for a moment you will see the
false gods vanish, and in a flare of
incandescence again you will intently
gaze at your true self,
that true self always veiled by so many masks,
the self that’s warped by requirements and impositions,
the one you also betray, the one of which others
rob and beguile you.
Thus your clay, purified like an earthen vessel,
and like bones stripped clean, will for one brief hour
extricate itself from the bitter burden of
living and dying.
