I understand that to be the case also. This was the main issue I raised when
questioning the validity of keystone, but I can see it may be a useful tool
to ascertain whether a person is experincing any problems. I also felt that
if there were problems then that person should be seen by a qualified
optician. I was told that we needed a screening tool to see who would
qualify for a contribution to specs. If a person wears specs anyway and not
specifically for use with a VDU then they would not be reimbursed the costs.
What concerns me is that I was prescribed a pair of specs to use
specifically when using a VDU but them passed the keystone when I got a
collegue to try it out on myself!

I do not have the DSE regs to hand but my understanding is that a DSE user
has the right to an eyesight test and that can only be conducted by a doctor
or optician, what we undertake as nurses is a screening process that
whatever the outcome does not meet this right. Please correct me if I am
wrong or it has changed in the last update

I find this an interesting issue. We carry out Keystone vision testing and
only refund a % of the costs for specs and pay for eye test if they fail the
VDU aspect of the test. However, having passed some people they have
returned saying their optician told them they do need specs for VDU and then
request a refund. We would never challenge this if they bring their
paperwork from the optician stating this. This lead me to question the value
of doing a preliminary test and I wrote to the opticians on the Isle of
Wight for their opinion. All those who replied said it was a useful screen
and I suppose only a few people challenge the results.
On the other hand I do feel that sight testing results are somewhat
subjective anyway as we have had a few new fire recruits who have failed a
sight test at one optician and passed at another the same week. It does not
seem wholly scientific and depends on the individual's performance on the
day.
What are other peoples experiences and thoughts?

I am employed at a university where we send our DSE users to an outside
optician for eye tests. As we have approx. 1000 employees who qualify
for eye tests there are significant cost implications. I would welcome
hearing what other organisations do and how the introduction of
keystone, etc eye testing, was received by individuals and the trade
unions
Thanks in advance,
