Dear Colleagues,
Thank you for your replies to my message.
I can see the attraction of Hays - they are inexpensive -
and undoubtedly they do have management problems which may
reflect on their workforce. Since I have been in charge of
the office here, we have not had any serious losses [x
fingers] and just a couple of 'unserious' ones. Apart from
our known criteria for lending, I tend not to send anything
on loan that 1] would be difficult to replace if lost - not
currently available on booksellers databases, and 2] would
cost more than £100 to replace. This procedure I have
adopted because neither party would wish to replace too
much material at such a high cost - in fact some of our
first editions printed after 1900 the cut off date for
lemding here - still can be valued at maybe £1000 to
replace!
Having said this readers are always welcome to
come here to read our material. I can give any details
whenever necessary, though I know it is not possible for
some readers to visit the library because of distance.
For a while I shall be putting slips in books - PLEASE DO
NOT RETURN BY HAYS - which I consider are reaching the
upper range in price [i.e. £100, or are in some way
unusual]. I apologise if some of you get these slips who
never use Hays.
Thank you for your understanding.
