Subject: Can GM feed the world?

SUMMARY
From Zambia to Brazil, China to Ethiopia, the use of genetically-modified
(GM) crops is deeply controversial. Two informed, passionate voices are in
contest on www.opendemocracy.net: Gordon Conway of the Rockefeller
Foundation advocates biotechnology as the way to end world hunger, while Liz
Orton of ActionAid responds with an argument for sustainability based on
African farmers' own skills and experience.

In our vibrant debate on People Flow - Migration & Europe: the author of
Alien Nation Peter Brimelow on why he thinks immigration in Europe as in the
US threatens the white majority.

Also: Paul Rogers on escalating US problems in Iraq is balanced by the
richly detailed and allusive inquiry of historian Peter Sluglett on the
lessons of Iraq's colonial past. Bernard Avishai seeks a driver for the
Israel-Palestine roadmap, while Navnita Chadha Behera examines the prospects
for peace in Kashmir.

From personal experience, Angeline Mukwendere celebrates women's education
as the route out of poverty in Africa, Richard Torne challenges Pere
Vilanova on the Spanish elections, and Caspar Henderson hears the sounds of
deep time in the Arctic.

Johannes Voggenhuber, and Kirsty Hughes and Giovanni Grevi, mark the end of
the lengthy European constitutional convention process. Will this be a
historic turning-point, or would we all rather be in Philadelphia?

WHY I'M A SUPPORTER...

"I did not subscribe because I agree with everything, but because
openDemocracy constitutes the 'cyber-agora' essential for a democratic
world."

Can GM feed the world?

BIOTECHNOLOGY CAN CURE HUNGER
The food security, life-chances and freedom of African farmers can be
immeasurably improved by the greater use of biotechnology, says GORDON
CONWAY, President of the Rockefeller foundation.

GM IS NOT THE SOLUTION: A RESPONSE TO CONWAY
Conway has the right questions but the wrong answers. LIZ ORTON says
Low-tech agro-ecology, based on traditional methods offers a far better
future for African farmers.

People Flow - Migration & Europe

THE MIGRATION TIME-BOMB
PETER BRIMELOW, author of Alien Nation, the core text of the US
anti-immigration argument, has a warning for Europe: immigration is
economically unnecessary, driven by misplaced guilt - and threatens the
white majority.

CONVENTION ENDGAME
Brussels insiders GIOVANNI GREVI and KIRSTY HUGHES review the logjam over

Iraq Fallout

IRAQ, BRITAIN AND AMERICA: NEW PERSPECTIVES, OLD PROBLEMS
Between the Ottomans and Saddam, the British ruled Iraq with imperial
majesty and air power. PETER SLUGLETT asks: can this history offer hope as
well warning to Iraq's suffering people?

SPANISH LESSONS - A REPLY TO PERE VILANOVA
The left expected a tide of anti-war feeling to sweep Jose Maria Aznar's
ruling party out of local government. It did not happen - because the left
no longer understands a changing Spain, argues RICHARD TORNE.
