Romanticism, History, Historicism
University of Wales, Aberystwyth, UK
18-22 June 2004
Plenary Speakers:
Alan Bewell, Tom Paulin, Kenneth R. Johnston, Marjorie Levinson,
Alan Liu, Jerome J. McGann, Anne Mellor,
Nicholas Roe, Susan Wolfson
This international conference represents a significant opportunity to take
stock of the orthodoxy within which, or against which, Romanticistshave
been writing for the last quarter of a century. How have New Historicist
approaches shaped our understanding of – for example – gender, authorship,
canon formation, editorial issues, and the relationship between text,
culture, and politics in the Romantic period?
Delegates are invited to submit 250-word abstracts of papers exploring any
aspect of our response to Romanticism’s engagement with history. We welcome
a variety of critical approaches to the subject. The deadline for abstracts
is 15 March 2004, but delegates are advised to submit abstracts as early as
possible.
Postgraduates are encouraged to submit papers. There will also be an
opportunity to showcase postgraduate research in the form of ‘posters’.
Informal queries are welcome.
