When I was at Leeds we used a virtual building called the Henry Boddington building for both pre-reg and post-reg students. It had a series of rooms where students could discuss matters, do group work (from distance from each other), could view lecture notes and readings, etc. The uptake was quite variable, but it the main it was successful. Biggest problem was HEFCE - when we were being assessed they kept seeing things like 'this lecture will be in the Henry Boddington Building' and they couldn't find it on the campus map (really, this is true!)
