Subject: Soldier Chonkin, Doctor Zhivago, and many others!
Dear RuSS Members and Friends,
There is an exciting news: Martin Dewhurst (from the University of Glasgow)
will give a talk on the history of SAMIZDAT (from Pasternak to
Solzhenitsyn). He will speak in English, with brief Russian translations if
necessary.
WHEN: 16th December, Monday, 7:30 pm
WHERE: The Library, Wolfson Court, Clarkeson Rd (off Grange Rd)
Martin Dewhurst was at the dawn of Samizdat himself, and used to bring
copies of illegal literature to the West back in the 60's and 70's. In
particular, he managed to transfer across the border a famous book by
Vladimir Voynovich "Pokhozhdeniya soldata Chonkina"! He is a brilliant
speaker, and I am sure that both the 'English' and the 'Russian' halves of
our society will find his talk similarly fascinating.
After the talk, there will be a SNACK-AND-DRINK party, so that we could
relax and talk to each other in a merry environment before some of us go
away for Christmas. The drinks and the snacks will be provided!
HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL THERE!
Vsego horoshego.
Tanya Yurasova
