The Russia and Eastern Europe Center at the University of Illinois,
Urbana-Champaign, announces its 2003 Summer Research Laboratory on Russia
and Eastern Europe. The Summer Lab provides free housing awards for
qualified graduate students/faculty and independent scholars. The Summer
Lab is an ideal program for doctoral students conducting
pre-dissertation/dissertation research. Below is a select list of

The University of Illinois is offering its annual Summer Research
Laboratory on Russia and Eastern Europe, June 16 - August 8, 2003.
Associates are given full library privileges to conduct research in the
University Library, which holds the largest Slavic collection west of
Washington, DC, and is staffed by Slavic reference librarians.
Beyond the research opportunities, the Lab offers programs, workshops and
discussion groups from June 16 to July 11:

Research Workshop (June 16-27)
This workshop provides practical information on conducting research in the
region.
The Workshop will include the following sessions:
Digital Workshop led by Miranda Beaven Remnek (new head of the UI Slavic
and East European Library)
Introduction to the Slavic Bibliography Workshop Online
Archives in Russia & Ukraine
Grant Writing
Russian Language Practicum
We plan to bring librarians from the region o teach the sessions on
bibliography and be available for one-on-one consultations.
Other activities include thematic/regional workshops and discussion groups,

Free housing awards: maximum 28 days for graduate students; 14 for all
others. (Associates are welcome to stay longer at their own expense.) All
associates also have access to the university's recreation center for a
small fee, which has an indoor and outdoor pools. Graduate students and
independent scholars are encouraged to apply.
Deadline to apply for housing awards: April 1. Firm for non-US
citizens/permanent residents to qualify for the housing awards; Qualified
US scholars (citizens or permanent residents) can apply up to three weeks
prior to their arrival, pending availability of housing. We strongly
encourage everyone to apply by April 1.
