Thanks to all for the discussion on person first terminology.
As far as some of the analogies being made to racial categories:
I think that the when a person identifies as a person of color he/she states a connection/affinity to other racially oppressed groups--likewise when someone choses to identify as a Black person--there is a connection to Black people outside the US context.
