Subject: [From EARCAG]: 'Searching for Alternative Globalism from Below' -- First Call for Paper: EARCAG OSAKA 2003

THE THIRD EARCAG -- FIRST CALL FOR PAPER,

                                                     16 December 2002

    +--------------------------------------------------------------------+

'Searching for Alternative Globalism from Below'

    The THIRD Conference of
THE EAST ASIAN REGIONAL CONFERENCES IN ALTERNATIVE GEOGRAPHY (EARCAG)

                                      5-9 AUGUST, 2003 OSAKA, JAPAN

ORGANISED by the EARCAG OSAKA Organising Committee

SPONSORED by Graduate School of Literature and Human Sciences, and
Urban-Culture Research Centre, Osaka City University

    +--------------------------------------------------------------------+

The EARCAG, first held in Kyongju, Korea in January 1999, has quickly secured its position as the focal point and main platform of discussions among alternative geographers in East and Southeast Asia in four years of time. In close alliance with the International Critical Geography Group (ICGG), it successfully held its second conference in Hong Kong in December 2001, with ca. 100 papers and two one-day excursions.

In accordance with the decision made in the last conference, the Third EARCAG will be held in Osaka, Japan in coming August. In the era of political and economic tension with stagnating market globalism and concomitant urban conflicts as well as threat from US of attack on Iraq, this conference will be the excellent forum of critical geographers in Asia, as well as those non-Asian critical geographers who are interested in learning and joining the discussion on critical geography in the region.

The main theme of the Third EARCAG will be 'Searching for Alternative Globalism from Below', with implication that we, critical geographers are in disparate need of finding the way to build globalisation from the below, based on stronger sense of community, solidarity and reciprocity. not on the alienating market economy.

Papers and organised sessions are welcome from everyone, geographers and non-geographers alike, from any geographical and disciplinary areas.
