Postdoctoral fellowships to the UK from USA
The Royal Society USA Research Fellowships have been established by the
Society to increase scientific collaboration between centres of excellence
in the UK and the USA. They are offered to encourage active and innovative
American postdoctoral scientists to undertake the highest quality research
in UK laboratories for extended periods of between one and three years.
Eligibility
Grants cover research in all branches of the natural sciences. Awards are
not granted in the areas of the social sciences or clinical medical
research. Applicants must either have a recent PhD, or expect to obtain a
PhD in advance of the proposed start date (must have written confirmation
of PhD), or be scientists who have just obtained a tenured position in a US
university and have the opportunity for sabbatical leave. Fellowships are
only open to persons who are US nationals living in the USA at the time of
application.
Host institutions
Applicants should have a clear research proposal acceptable to a chosen
host institution, which should be a UK university or other recognized
research institution. The relevant UK Head of Department/Research Group
will need to complete a confidential statement outlining existing contacts
with applicants and their departments/research groups.
Duration
Appointments are tenable for a minimum of 12 and a maximum of 36 months to
start between 1 June and 1 October 2003.
Frequency
Fellowships will be offered once a year. They will be advertised in
relevant journals and on the Internet, including the Royal Society’s website.
Value
Funding for each fellowship will be assessed individually, taking account
of the awardee’s sabbatical arrangements if applicable. Levels of
remuneration will be calculated on a sliding scale commensurate with
current UK academic staff salaries (up to c.£35,000 pa plus a London
allowance of £2134 pa where applicable). An allowance for reasonable
research expenses (for consumables, equipment and conference travel) of up
to £12,000 pa will be available. In addition there will be a contribution
to transatlantic travel of up to £2000 at the beginning and end of each
fellowship, to include dependants.
Closing Date
All application forms and associated statements should be received at the
Royal Society by 31st January 2003.

For further infomation, see the Royal Society's web page
(http://www.royalsoc.ac.uk). Click on "International", then "Country
Index", then on the fellowship entry for USA.
