I support Simon's view that we are the last of the generalists. We come
from a variety of backgrounds and consequently if we don't know the fine
details on an area we know a clinician who does.
Our role is to orchestrate acute care for trauma and medical cases of
varied severity.
We should use techniques that work for our set of circumstances. In some
cases that involves See & Treat, in some it means clinics.
In all cases it works better with adequate numbers of adequately trained
senior staff.
As clinical leader I design my department to work as safely for the patient
and trust as I can.
As Simon says we should be proud of the fact that when the brown stuff
flies, we are the ones they come to to dig them out because the rest of the
world seems to have become too specialised and are too aloof to be
street-wise.
