I was in london too, it was nice to see some old friends and meet some new
ones.
I have very mixed feelings, on the one hand we are in a position to make
positive changes but I can't help thinking that the issues of undercapacity
and understaffing are the real problems (not just in A/E, but across the
whole health community). This will not change enough in the next 12 months
to make any significant impact.
I am also unimpressed with the mantra that mori polls indicate that waiting
times are at the VERY top of the publics demands, it depends on how the
question was framed. (do not forget that the polls were wrong when kinnock
was not elected).
I know that this is naive but instead of 'You will achieve 4 hour
turnaround, non negotiable, without new resourses and using existing IT by
2003'.
It would be preferable to have
'Achieve a sustainable emergency service which delivers a high standard of
care to the people who need it and deliver CLINICAL targets (eg, thombolysis
times, missed # rates etc) while we sort out the undercapacity'.
Final thought, if we fail which I fear that we will (even if we do hit the
target, it will not take long for us to be overwhelmed with new work; why
bother going to a gp when you are GUARANTEED to be seen and treated within 4
hrs in A/E), what then?
I suspect that Anthony Blair et al will blame us; 'we have spent millions
and this lot (us) can't deliver!!'
Sorry to be a bit of an eyeore but it is monday, raining, still dark and I
have a big clinic!!
Maybe I will feel better later
Paul
