Subject: From-Lutz-Leisering: Forwarding-a-job-offer
University of Bielefeld, Germany, Department of Sociology
Prof Lutz Leisering Ph.D. (Chair of Social Policy and Institute for Global
Society Studies)
October 2002
Doctoral researcher in sociology/political science/social policy
Applications are invited for a three-year position (2003-2005) in a
cross-national and
interdisciplinary research project on reform policies in the field of
old-age pensions in Europe
(subject to a grant by the German National Research Council [Deutsche
Forschungsgemeinschaft]). The research team includes doctoral and
postdoctoral
researchers from sociology and law. Case studies will be carried out in
Germany, Britain and
Sweden. The project focuses on new demands for governments that ensue from
a growing
reliance on private provision for old age in European welfare states.
Governments increasingly
assume the task of regulating private and occupational provisions in
financial markets while
state pensions are downsized. New instruments, new actors and new arenas of
conflict arise in
the process - a move towards a 'regulatory welfare state'? The project
links welfare state
theory, qualitative policy analysis, legal analysis and (to a lesser
extent) quantitative analysis.
The successful candidate will be in charge of the case study in Britain, an
institutional and policy
analysis based on qualitative interviews with relevant public and private
actors and an analysis
of printed material. Cooperation with the team is important, including
cooperation with the
team members who do legal and quantitative analyses of Britain.
The candidate is expected to work for a Ph.D. degree (preferably at the
University of
Bielefeld, thesis can be submitted in English) in conjunction with the
research project. The
candidate should hold a relevant degree.
All papers can be written in English though learning German is encouraged.
The department of
sociology at Bielefeld University ranks among the largest and foremost
sociological
departments in Europe. Bielefeld is situated in North Germany, in a
beautiful hilly area close to
Hannover, and has a population of 320,000.
The salary will be according to BAT IIa/2, the usual salary for such
positions in Germany.
Bielefeld University is an equal opportunity employer. Women and persons
with disabilities are
particularly encouraged to apply. The project is designed to start in
January 2003. A slightly
later start of the candidate may be considered if necessary.
