Globalisation's Challenge to Labour
A two session module at the RGS-IBG Conference, London, September 3-5 2003,
convened by Susan McGrath-Champ (University of Sydney, Australia) and Jane
Wills (Queen Mary, University of London).
Globalisation poses new challenges to labour. The relocation of capital,
ongoing restructuring, privatisation and supply-side reforms are all posing
difficulties to organised labour. Moreover, the old institutions are under
real strain and growing numbers of workers, North and South, remain outside
trade unions.
This module will seek to explore these challenges and the ways in which
they might be overcome.
Particular attention will be paid to the re-scaling of trade union
organisation - including community-unionism, regional initiatives and
internationalism - and the growth of non-union responses to labour market
reform.
