Teratology does derive from the word for monsters. As I understand it:
Teratogens are substances in the environment or diet or drugs which
cause birth abnormalities. Thalidomide would be the obvious example.
Epilepsy drugs, high dose vitamin A, and emmissions from landfill sites
seem to be others.
A considerable proportion of congenital impairment is caused by
teratogens. Taking folic acid prior to conception and during pregnancy
can reduce the risk of teratogenesis.
So, while the words is highly offensive, the general medical approach
might be considered less controversial by many.
