PhD Studentship: Geographies of children/youth in Central and Eastern Europe
Applications are invited for a PhD studentship exploring geographical
aspects of children's lives in any part of Central and Eastern Europe.
proposals relating to children/youth in especially difficult circumstances
(including street children/child labour/children in institutions) are
especially welcome.
Geographies of children and youth are a focal area of research within the
Department of Geography & Earth Sciences, with the staff of the Children's
Geographies Research Unit currently working on several externally funded
projects. Further details of our research can be found on the department
web page: http://www.brunel.ac.uk/depts/geo/
Brunel University also actively supports research with children and young
people; it recently established a new inter-disciplinary Child Focused
Research Centre. Members of the centre are engaged in research in the UK,
Europe, including Central and Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia. Further
details can be obtained from the centre web site:
http:www.brunel.ac.uk/research/cfr/
The studentship is expected to be for three years, although progress will
be reviewed annually. It will include an annual bursary of £7,500, payment
of student fees at the UK/EU rate and reasonable fieldwork expenses. The
student will be expected to spend a minimum of six months conducting
fieldwork in Central/Eastern Europe.
Research students are expected to participate in formal research training
(unless they already have the necessary skills). The Department also
encourages attendance at relevant research training courses and research
seminars in the UK.
Applicants should have a good honours degree in Geography or a related
Social Science. A postgraduate qualification in a relevant field would be
an advantage. Experience of using qualitative research methods is
desirable, as is experience of work or study in Central/Eastern Europe.
Language skills would also be an advantage but are not essential.
To apply, please send a letter of application, a full CV, and a brief
research proposal (approximately 1000 words) along with the names and
addresses of two academic referees, to arrive by 14th December 2002, to: Dr
Lorraine Young, Dept of Geography & Earth Sciences, Brunel University,
Uxbridge, West London, UB8 3PH UK.
