HERITAGE AND IDENTITY
Part of the ESRC-funded Seminar Programme entitled 'Accessing Identity'
Hosted by the Department of Marketing, University of Stirling
Wednesday 15 January 2003
The Management Centre, Stirling
Heritage and Identity aims to foster dialogue between academic work of a
theoretical and empirical nature on identity and heritage, and the
practical dilemmas facing those in various heritage organisations who
are dealing on an everyday basis with a diverse public with differing
needs and attitudes to heritage. It is therefore of interest to
practitioners dealing with visitors and attempting to diversify their
visiting public through various initiatives in their organisations. It
encompasses wider concerns surrounding nationality, race, ethnicity,
gender, sexuality, class, and other identities from the perspective of
understanding consumers. From the academic side, the seminar will be of
interest to those studying the sociology of heritage, identity issues,
social exclusion, cultural studies, nationalism studies, gender studies
and critical management studies. After the presentations from a range of
speakers, we conclude with a Panel Discussion which aims to bring
together and explore the emergent issues from the series of
presentations. It is envisaged that a significant amount of time will be
given to interaction, participation and discussion, particularly during
the latter stages of the event.
