CALL FOR PAPERS
Literary Education and Canon Formation
8-9 May 2003
AHRB Centre for Asian and African Literatures, SOAS and UCL
London
This is the first workshop of the research project 'The Social Context of
Literary Production and Consumption', led by Prof Michel Hockx (Chinese,
School of Oriental and African Studies) and Dr George Paizis (French,
University College London) for the AHRB Centre for Asian and African
Literatures. The aim of the workshop is to examine the effects of literary
education on the formation of literary canons across cultures, as well as
the position of literary education within literary practice as a whole. The
emphasis of the workshop is on literary education is it currently takes
place in the fields of twentieth-century Chinese, French and English
literature, though paper proposals related to other literatures will also be
considered.
We invite proposals for papers dealing with one or more of the following
questions:
*How does literary education contribute to the shaping and changing of
literary canons?
*How does 'the canon' differ from one society to the other and what does
that tell us about those societies?
* How does literary education contribute to the perpetuation of specific
views of literature?
*How does literary education relate to language education?
*How is the same literature taught and/or examined in different countries
(e.g. How is Chinese literature taught in Britain, in France, and in Taiwan?)
*What is the position of literary educators within the literary field?
The workshop will be held at University College London. There are no fees,
and accommodation is provided for speakers. Unfortunately, we are not able
to offer any assistance with travel funding for those outside the UK.
Paper proposals should be no longer than one page (typed A4) and should be
sent by e-mail to Dr Ross Forman ([log in to unmask]) at the AHRB Centre by 10
January 2003.
