The National Institute of Economic and Social Research and the Institute of Psychiatry, Kings'
College London, are holding a major one-day conference on 23 January 2003, entitled:
A Biological and Socio-Economic Assessment of the Consequences of
an Ageing Population
The purpose of this conference is to promote multidisciplinary discussion of ageing by bringing
together biological research on epidemiology, life-spans and ageing disorders and an
assessment of the economic and social changes which are associated with these. It follows the
thread the full way from the biological basis of the ageing process to their economic and social
implications and thus helps researchers and practitioners in the field gain a perception of the
likely evolution of ageing and the social and economic consequences thereof.
The conference:
This conference will begin with an account of current research into ageing processes. This will
be followed by a survey of current epidemiological trends and their social and budgetary
implications. This will then lead into a specific account of Alzheimer's Disease and an
assessment of different methods of paying for long-term care of the elderly.
Proposed Programme:
Professor T Kirkwood (University of Newcastle): What is a Lifespan
Professor T Meade (London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine): Epidemiologist
Professor M Knapp (Institute of Psychiatry):Costs of Alzheimer's Disease
