SGAI, the British Computer Society Specialist Group on Artificial
Intelligence was founded in June 1980. The group's original name
was SGES, which reflected its early focus on rule-based Expert
Systems. However the group's scope expanded rapidly after its
foundation and it now covers all areas of Artificial Intelligence. SGAI
has played a valuable role in the development of the field in Britain
over the last 20 years.
Group activities include a long-running annual series of international
conferences on Knowledge Based Systems and Applied Artificial
Intelligence in Cambridge in December and related publications, an
annual competition for 'Progress Towards Machine Intelligence',
hosting of the annual UK Case-Based Reasoning workshop series,
the 'SGAI International Workshop' series, evening lectures in
London, a regular journal (Expert Update), which is free of charge
to members, involvement in ECCAI (the European Co-ordinating
Committee for Artificial Intelligence), organization of the major AI
conference IJCAI-2005 in Edinburgh and an electronic list server to
facilitate discussion and dissemination of information.
We are interested in co-opting additional members (based in the
UK) to our main committee. If you are interested in joining us
please send me a brief CV and an indication of how you would
expect to be able to make an active contribution to the Group, for
consideration at our January meeting.
Committee meetings generally take place four times a year in
central London, together with a meeting during our annual
conference in Cambridge. Travel expenses will be reimbursed.
